The Volunteer Orientation is a half-day program. The agenda includes: · A Survivor’s Story – a survivor of partner abuse shares his experience and answers questions · GMDVP – its history, mission and structure · The Basics of Intimate Partner Abuse – a definition, types of abuse, the cycle of abuse, partner abuse statistics, myths, barriers to service and resources for survivors. · Meeting the Staff – two to three members of the GMDVP staff attend to meet the volunteers and describe their roles and responsibilities · A Review of Volunteer Opportunities Training Hotline volunteers and survivor speakers receive additional specialized training. Hotline volunteers receive extensive (over 25 hours) of training both on intimate partner abuse and on skills needed to work with survivors of abuse. Survivor speakers are supported through the process of preparing to share their story and work with the Education Department in practicing their presentation until they are comfortable sharing their story in public. Volunteer Application If you are interested in becoming a GMDVP volunteer, please click on the ‘Volunteer Application’ tab, fill out the application and submit it.
